Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage was established in 1955 by Margaret and Philip Isely, parents of the current leadership. They started the business by going door-to-door in Golden, Colorado, selling whole-grain bread and sharing nutrition information with people they met.
The Iselys found that the more health and nutrition knowledge their neighbors possessed, the healthier the food they wanted. Their door-to-door business was successful enough that within a short time they were able to open their first retail location – a modest storefront that looked like a cottage. And, yes, that’s where the original name Vitamin Cottage comes from.
More than 50 years after the company was founded, the commitment to service our customers has never changed:
Born some 40 years ago as Mr. Natural’s Good Food Store, we’re still Missoula’s home for locally-produced, organic and bulk foods. Now our name’s a little shorter.
And the store’s a lot bigger. But our mission remains the same:
The Good Food Store is a non-profit corporation dedicated to supporting a healthy community. We provide a wide selection of organic food and natural products, conduct
our business in an ethical and respectful manner and donate to organizations in need.
Stroll our aisles and among your discoveries will be the Northwest’s largest bulk department, the only certified organic meat department in Western Montana and an award-winning selection of organic produce. What you won’t find are artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Or hydrogenated oils. Or hormone-laced dairy products. No, you’ll just find the good stuff at the Good Food Store.

Just getting back from a very successful KeHE show in Chicago. We met many people and companies from all over the country as far away as New York and Honolulu. We let many participants sample our new and traditional products and we received many wonderful comments of our Snakaroon and Snakarola. One participant said that “they taste refreshing and healthy for me” We like to hear that because that is what we are. Eat Well Be Well Live Well! and we stand behind that.
The Chicago Show is a wonderful place to show because we meet people and company’s from the east and west. We are moving forward to setup out products in new Mom and Pop shops as well as some new Major Retailers but more to come on this in the future. Find us near you here!
