Curry powder, often used in Middle Eastern, Asian, and Indian dishes, has an often overlooked ingredient that offers numerable health benefits. The ingredient is, turmeric, and is part of the ginger family. It has a lovely red-orange color (see above), and a slightly pungent, earthy, and aromatic flavor. It is most often found in yellow mustard, being the ingredient that gives it its recognizable yellow color and bitter flavor. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a digestive aid. Turmeric is also known for its ability to ease arthritis pain, headache, and upset stomach. Turmeric may help to prevent certain cancers, such as prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colon cancer.
Curcumin, the antioxidant in turmeric helps fight against free radicals, depression and high cortisol levels. Turmeric also helps to break down cholesterol and burn fat. Its positive effect on blood glucose levels help manage diabetes and it may detoxify the liver; helping maintain a healthy digestive system.
